Cuban-Inspired Black Beans with Plantains and Rice

2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 medium white onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. coriander
1/2 tsp. cumin
Scant 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Dash smoked paprika
1 (15 oz.) can black beans, undrained*
1/2 to 1 cup water
Dab of butter
1 plantain, chopped
Juice of 1 lime
2 cups cooked brown rice
